Tsinghua University - Southwest Jiaotong University Joint Course for Master of Landscape Architecture：Design and Study of the Sanxingdui National Archaeological Site Park Successfully Begin

In the afternoon of September 15, 2021, Tsinghua University-Southwest Jiaotong University Joint Course for Master of Landscape Architecture: Design and Study of the Sanxingdui National Archaeological Site Park kicked off at the Sanxingdui Museum. With the support of Sichuan Provincial Architectural Design and Research Institute Co.,Ltd, (SADI), a national model base for joint cultivation of Master of Landscape Architecture, and conducted both online and offline, students and teachers from Tsinghua University and Southwest Jiaotong University successfully completed the initial task of the course, including introducing the background of the topic and the site, giving academic lectures on the major historical sites and the national archaeological site parks and carrying out site inspection of the main area of the Sanxingdui.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Fu Ya, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture, SA&D. Professor Yang Qingjuan, vice dean of the School, expressed her earnest hope for the joint programs on landscape architecture of Tsinghua University and Southwest Jiaotong University, with special gratitude for the support and assistance of the Tsinghua University faculty during the past four consecutive years. Professor Zhu Yufan from the Department of Landscape Architecture of Tsinghua University, as the initiator and leader of the course, gave a detailed introduction of the course's development, teaching content and the team from Tsinghua University. He also acknowledged the importance of the typical and representative regional landscape in the southwest region to the course, and he looked forward to the results of the course. Xu Yuan, Assistant Professor of the Department of Landscape Architecture, Tsinghua University, further introduced the basic information of the course.

Two wonderful academic lectures were delivered during the opening ceremony, respectively by Zhou Jia, executive chief landscape architect of SADI, who introduced the background and the  and by Tian Kai from School of Architecture and Design, Southwest Jiaotong University, whose lecture was themed on "From Sanxingdui to Ba-Shu Culture: Choices and Ripples in Civilization ". Later, teachers and students form Tsinghua University and SWTJU conducted the on-line  research, successfully completing the initial task of the course. Also participating in this course were Zhou Sixiang and Qian Liyuan, deputy heads of the Department of Landscape Architecture of SWJTU, Zhao Haoyu, assistant director of SADI, and a number of leading designers.

It is reported that the study subject, the Sanxingdui, is an important symbol of the world's bronze civilization from the 16th century/ B.C. to the 14th century B.C. and is of great value in the study of the development of early states and religious beliefs, standing important to the history of human civilization. The Sanxingdui is also one of the largest capital city sites located in central area in southwest China as an ancient regional cultural center. Its discovery provides unique physical evidence of the lost ancient Shu Kingdom, the history of civilization in the Sichuan region by more than 2,000 years. The national archaeological site park design research around ancient sites is an important area of teaching and practice for landscape architecture majors. This graduate project will focus on the Sanxingdui site to develop design research in the fields of cultural heritage, site area planning, and site parks, encouraging students to use diversified technical means and design ideas to propose archaeological site park research ideas that fully reflect the characteristics of the era, region, and culture The students will be encouraged to use diversified technical means and design ideas to propose research ideas for archaeological site parks that fully reflect the characteristics of the era, region and culture, and to develop detailed designs for small and medium scale spaces.
