Appointment Ceremony for Professor Zhang Biao and the Lecture on Chinese Calligraphy Successfully Held
May 19, 2021 - Organized by School of Architecture and Design (SA&D), SWJTU, the appointment ceremony for Professor Zhang Biao as adjunct professor of SWTJU and his lecture on Chinese Calligraphy was successfully held in the conference hall A100 of the Architecture and Design Building. Professor Zhang give a vivid lecture on Chinese Calligraphy.
The appointment ceremony and the lecture was presided by Zhu Jianmei, Vice President of SWTJU. Yang Dan, President of SWTJU, Zhang Zutao, Chief Librarian of SWJTU, Wu Xiaoxiong, Secretary of the Party Committee of SA&D, Shen Zhongwei, Executive Dean of SA&D, and teachers and students were present.
Professor Zhang Biao is deeply related to Sichuan province and SWJTU. Born in Luannan County, Hebei Province in August, 1946, he become a member of Youth League in 1965 and the CPC in 1978. He graduated from Chengdu Institute of Telecommunications Engineering (now University of Electronic Science and Technology). He has worked in the press for a long time, serving as a reporter and station manager of the Sichuan correspondent station of China Youth Daily, deputy chief editor of China Youth Daily, deputy chief editor and chief editor of Science and Technology Daily, and executive director of the All-China Journalists Association, etc. In February 2000, Prof. Zhang Biao was appointed secretary of the Party of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and in December, he was elected as the vice chairman of the China Calligraphers Association. He was a member of the Committee of the whole of the 5th and 6th China Federation of the Literacy and Art Circles. In November 2005, he was appointed as Director of the China Art Newspaper. In 2014, he was awarded as the National Outstanding Retired Cadres and was received by President Xi Jinping.
Professor Zhang has been dedicated to creating works and has held eight calligraphy exhibitions . The latest work is Zhegutian（Partridge Sky）comprised by 85 poems and 255 pieces of calligraphy made during the 2020 epidemic. He is also writing "Zhang Biao's Diary of Poetry and Calligraphy against the Epidemic". In July 2020, he launched a column on Wechat called Kehaizhuixing (Chasing Stars in Science Sea)", which celebrates China's famous scientists in poetry and calligraphy and has published over 130 issues.
President Yang Dan presented Professor Zhang Biao with an appointment letter as an adjunct professor of Southwest Jiaotong University the emblem of the University. In his speech, Prof. Zhang expressed his heartfelt gratitude to SWJTU for this appointment, which was a great honor. He said he would live up to his responsibility and use his knowledge and expertise to make contributions to the University.
Professor Zhang then presented five calligraphic works to SWJTU in praise of the five outstanding alumni of SWJTU. Students and teachers present marveled at the wonderful words and the brilliant calligraphy artworks with rounds of applause.
Vice President Zhu Jianmei accepted the calligraphy work on behalf of SWTJU and souvenirs in return.
Professor Zhang then gave a lecture on the theme of "Aesthetic Talk on Chinese Calligraphy". He discussed four aspects of the aesthetic system of calligraphy, including the aesthetic system of Chinese Calligraphy, consensus and disagreement of each system, the culture of calligraphy, and the works evaluated as good by the whole society. The lecture was interesting, thought-provoking and easy-to-understand with vivid explanations and touching narratives.
During the Q&A session, he answered the questions from audience drawing on his own exprience. He encouraged students and teachers who are passionate about calligraphy to start learning by copying and practicing the basic skills, and work to record, write and eulogize the times, and create for the people. In the end, Professor Zhang sent a message to the audience: "Plant a green seed in spring and reap a rich harvest in autumn.
Finally, Vice President Zhu Jianmei made a concluding speech. She appreciated Professor Zhang 's quality and calligraphy artworks, and hoped that teachers and students could learn from his fine quality of "enrich oneself through literature and knowledge", appreciate the charm of calligraphy art, carry forward Chinese classical traditions and improve their humanistic qualities.
The School of Architecture and Design will continue to bring into play its characteristics and advantages of interdisciplinarity and integration of multi-platform, adhere to the philosophy of "aesthetic education, synerized discipline development", consolidate the theoretical and aesthetic education and cultivate all-rounded students.
